• The area where Atmore currently exists was once home to the Creek Indians. American development in the area began shortly after the Civil War, during the construction of the Great Northern Railroad and other, smaller railroads. The city wasn't officially incorporated until 1907.
• Atmore was first recorded as a stop along the Great Northern Railroad, as well as the more local Mobile Railroad. The city sprang up around the railway stop, with business owners and entrepreneurs looking for easy access to the larger cities.
• The town was named for C.P. Atmore, general passenger agent of the Louisville and Nashville Railroad who was a friend of prominent citizen and business owner, William Marshall Carney. The town was originally going to be named Carney, however, there was a nearby town bearing the same name, after W. M. Carney's brother. Atmore never visited the town that took his name.
