Dos Palos was initially founded as a town in 1892. In 1893, Bernhard Marks established a colony in southeast Dos Palos. Marks felt the land was too small for farming, and upon agreement from a local ranch Miller & Lux, the colonists inhabited Dos Palos.
In 1893, the first fruit tree was planted, jump-starting cultivation in the area. By Jan. 1, 1899, the colony had 600 people. The town was first named Colony Center, and later changed to Dos Palos in 1906 because of two dead poplar trees in the village.
Newcomers should check out the Dos Palos Jail Museum located in the town's old jail building, enjoy shopping at local farmer's markets or outdoor activities at any of the local parks and waterways. Venture out of town and explore events throughout Merced County or travel to downtown Merced in 30 minutes. People can even go hiking in the Sierra National Forest or check out Yosemite National Park.
