Facts for Renters About Hercules
The city was originally the home of the California Powder Works, an explosives company. The name of the city comes from one of the powders it produced, which was in turn named after the legendary hero.
Buffer zones made of eucalyptus trees were planted around the company to protect the surrounding homes of workers if an explosion occurred. The trees remain there to this day.
In the '60s, the plant moved from producing explosives to producing fertilizer. The city grew up around the plant, since there was no longer any danger to building there.
This city on the water has great restaurants for foodies to enjoy. For instance, The Powder Keg Pub has chowder, fish and chips, oysters and other high-quality seafood and offers outdoor seating. Renters can also explore the local farmers market to get fresh produce. Parks like the Refugio Valley Park offer fields, trails, barbecue pits and playgrounds as well as a lake. These make it perfect for time with the family, running, biking, swimming and more. The city also hosts an annual Fourth of July celebration that includes a 5K run, fireworks and food.
