The San Diego school district offers 113 elementary schools, 23 middle schools, 4 atypical schools, 10 alternative schools, 27 high schools and 25 charter schools.

Public and private secondary schools include the University of California - San Diego, San Diego State University, and the San Diego Community College District, which includes San Diego City College, San Diego Mesa College, San Diego Miramar College, Alliant International University, Design Institute of San Diego, John Paul the Great Catholic University, National University, Pacific Oaks College, The Art Institute of California, San Diego, Point Loma Nazarene University, and University of San Diego. One medical school and three law schools also serve the area.

Working in San Diego

San Diego's economy includes defense, manufacturing, and tourism. However, certain neighborhoods also offer research facilities for biotechnology companies. Neurocrine Biosciences and Nventa Biopharmaceuticals, BD Biosciences, Biogen Idec, Integrated DNA Technologies, Merck, Pfizer, Élan, Genzyme, Cytovance, Celgene and Vertex have facilities in and around the city. San Diego also hosts wireless companies such as Qualcomm. Major shipbuilding and submarine yards are found on near the west coast. The cruise ship industry generates $2 million in purchases of food, fuel, supplies, and maintenance services. Major defense contractors are also headquartered in San Diego. San Diego's mild climate encourages tourism.

San Diego is home to several military bases, including U.S. Navy ports, Marine Corps bases, and Coast Guard stations. San Diego hosts the largest naval fleet in the world.

Entertainment in San Diego

The Museum of Man, located in Balboa Park, is a popular place to visit in the city. Balboa Park offers several other museums, including the San Diego Museum of Art, the San Diego Natural History Museum, and the Museum of Photographic Arts.

San Diego offers a diverse art scene. Little Italy is teeming with retail design stores and galleries that offer art and design exhibitions on Friday nights. Small art galleries in North Park host “Ray at Night” on Saturday evenings.

The San Diego Symphony, San Diego Opera, and the Old Globe Theatre are popular entertainment venues. Many tourist attractions are spread throughout the city, including SeaWorld San Diego, Belmont amusement park, San Diego Zoo, San Diego Wild Animal Park, and Legoland. Surfing and skateboarding are also popular in the city. Annual events such as the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon also draw large crowds.

San Diego offers Qualcomm Stadium, home of the San Diego Chargers, which also hosts soccer games and Supercross events. Major League Baseball's San Diego Padres can be found at PETCO Park.
