Manitou Springs CO Real Estate & Area Information
Founded on 11 mineral springs and their healing powers, Manitou Springs is now one of the most visited and most popular small towns in the country. Manitou Springs is nestled between what is now Colorado Springs and Pikes Peak National Forest, and was first discovered in the 1820s. The city was settled in the 1870s, and people flocked to the “Saratoga of the West” for the medicinal powers of the mineral springs at the end of the 19th century. The area’s economy suffered in the early 1900s, and the city’s life remained stagnant for much of the 20th century. However, in the 1970s efforts began to revive Manitou Springs. The Mineral Springs Foundation formed in 1987, and now the city is thriving. It was even named the Coolest Small Town of 2008 by Budget Travel.
Today, Manitou Springs is minutes from some of the most spectacular natural views in the U.S. Just north of the town of 5,000 is the cultural and geological exhibit Garden of the Gods. Seven Falls, the series of waterfalls and the “Grandest Mile of Scenery in Colorado” is also mere minutes away. Another popular destination is Cave of the Winds, the site of caves formed by 500 million-year-old limestone and discovered in the late 1800s. Visitors and residents of Manitou Springs also enjoy the Victorian-style Miramont Castle, the Cliff Dwellings Museum, which was built more than 700 years ago, the Flying W Ranch and the Ghost Town Museum. Additionally, the town offers “Springsabouts” – walking tours discussing and demonstrating the history of the mineral springs and the area. Some of the biggest annual events in the area include The Great Fruitcake Toss, the Manitou Springs wine Festival and the Mumbo Jumbo Gumbo Cooke-Off and Carnivale Parade. Finally, if you still seek more entertainment, be sure to check out all the attractions in Colorado Springs (seven miles east of Manitou Springs) and Denver (65 miles north).
