Florissant is a small suburb located about 35 miles northwest of Colorado Springs. The city, whose name is derived from the French word for "flourish," has indeed flourished into a town of over 5,000 with two highly-renowned parks less than 15 miles away: Florissant Fossil Bed National Monument and Mueller State Park.
The monument showcases one of the largest deposits of fossils in the world, with more than 1,700 differing species. It displays dinosaurs, prehistoric reptiles and fish and ancient plants. Additionally, it documents the history of the people of the area, including the native tribes who once lived here and the pioneers who traveled through.
Mueller is a 5,000-acre park offering a 50-mile trail open to numerous recreational activities, including hiking, biking and wildlife watching. Hunting is also allowed, although restrictions vary based on availability and season. Some of the unique species found in the park are elk, black bear, hawks and mule deer. Visitors can also camp at Mueller, with over 100 camp sites available. Sixteen of those sites remain open in the winter. If you prefer water attractions, Florissant is just five miles from Lake George.
