Avon Park is located in Highlands County and is approximately an hour from the city of Lakeland. Homes for rent allow families to visit one of the various lakes in the area, such as Lake Verona which is in Avon Park. Visitors can also check out exciting races in neighboring Sebring at the airport in March or indulge in some Mexican cuisine at top-rated Taqueria Merlo.
Facts for Renters
One of the main notable settlers who came to the area was Walter Crosby in 1894. He came to study wildlife and named the area Lake Forest. Crosby and another investor purchased the 20,000-acre lot for $50,000 from the previous owner, Hamilton Disston.
Crosby planned to survey and sell the land completely. He hired William King to manage the development of Lake Forest. King's wife arrived and renamed the area to Avon Park after the Kings' England home in Stratford-on-Avon.
In 1889, the first hotel was built to welcome prospective buyers to the city. It was named the Verona Hotel and sat on Verona Lake. George Sebring often stayed here.
Later churches, a bandstand and other establishments were built near the hotel to entertain visitors.
The hotel no longer exists, but visitors can still enjoy lake views from places like the Lake Verona B&B.
