Facts for Renters
Bonita Springs was first discovered in the 1870s. The first visitors to the area were government surveyors who settled near a medicinal spring that Native Americans claimed had healing powers. Once the visitors left, the area was known as the Survey and the water that came from it was called Surveyor's Creek.
In the 1880s, the population doubled when Braxton Comer came to the area and bought 6,000 acres of land. Comer then imported 50 African American families to work on a massive plantation where pineapples, coconuts and bananas were grown.
By 1887, the first school was constructed with a thatched roof and log walls. Soon after the Eagle Hotel rose up, welcoming visitors to enjoy hunting and fishing.
In 1912, a surveyor came to the area and bought up 2,400 acres of land. They laid out a town complete with streets and avenues. They decided the name Survey was not attractive enough, so they renamed the town Bonita Springs.
The land soon developed to welcome the Everglades Wonder Gardens, the Shell Factory, shopping malls and golf courses.
