Acworth is a suburb of Atlanta, located about 35 miles northwest of the city and 18 miles outside the perimeter. Acworth, which has a population of about 20,000, is also known as “The Lake City” because of Lake Acworth and Lake Allatoona. The Cherokee Nation inhabited the area of Acworth in the early 19th century. It was incorporated in 1840 and named for Acworth, New Hampshire and was largely burned down by General Sherman on his March to the Sea.
