• The Union Township was named to commemorate the Federal Union. Many locals call this community the "Peaceful Township." The community first came together in 1836. 
• The township has three creeks - Salt Creek, Taylor Creek and Yellow Creek. Salt Creek was named after the salt springs in the area. All three creeks empty into a lake of some sort, some of which even enter into another waterway.
• This township used to have a lot of marshland because of all the creeks and lakes, but now it doesn't as the landscape has changed and much of it was drained or plowed over.
• The community was known for its distribution of wheat, rye and oats, as it is located on major prairie land. This area is known as the Twenty-Mile Prairie, because its 20 miles to the nearest major destination each way.
• The initial settlers, all who were men, paid a little over $100 for the acres that make up the Union Township.
• When the township was first created, Indiana was considered to be part of the Far West.
