• The town was named for the cathedral city of Wells in Somerset, England.
• The Plymouth Company in England awarded the area where Wells is now located to Sir Ferdinando Gorges in 1622. Gorges sent his cousin, Thomas, to act as his deputy and agent, and Thomas granted the lands from northeast of the Ogunquit River to southwest of the Kennebunk River to agents from Exeter, New Hampshire, in 1641. Their goal was to settle the plantation of Wells.
• After Sir Ferdinando Gorges died and following political upheaval in England, the Massachusetts Bay Colony claimed all of Maine. In 1653, Wells submitted to their control.
• The Indian Wars that took place from 1675 until the mid-1700s turned Wells into a frontier town. The Indians devastated all the territory northeast of Wells.
