Facts for Renters
York was settled in 1624 and went through a variety of names, including Agamenticus and Bristol. In 1642, the name changed to Gorgeana, which was the area's official title when it became the first city to be incorporated in the U.S.
The area was eventually claimed by Massachusetts, declared a town and renamed York. Although Maine seceded from Massachusetts in 1820, the name stuck.
York's position made it an excellent port of trade, and the town often did business with the West Indies. The Embargo Act of 1807 put an end to this industry, but the town remained prosperous as a tourist destination.
Wealthy New Englanders favored York as a vacation spot throughout the 20th century, and many of the town's buildings reflect this era of architecture. Many structures are still maintained by the Old York Historical Society and can be visited as museums.
