Facts for Renters

  • In the 1600s, Detroit was controlled by the French who were fearful that the area would be overtaken by the British, who occupied most of New England. The French decided to settle in Detroit for its access to the Great Lakes and its location right on the river, which would later be named the Detroit River. Detroit was named by the French as "Le Detroit," meaning "The straits."
  • In the mid 1700s, Detroit was battled for by the British and the French. The British ended up taking over the French posts, causing settlers to move back to parts of Canada such as Quebec. Many of the Iroquois tribes in this area also sided with the British during the fights. Despite the retreat, parts of Detroit still have French history.
  • If you appreciate the Motown sound, visit the Motown Historical Museum. This establishment teaches visitors about the history of Motown music and Motown records, which was once in Detroit. The word "motown" is a combination of motor and downtown.
