• Collins was originally established in the early 1800s as Williamsburg, the then-seat of justice for Covington County. When the Gulf and Ship Island railroad was built in 1899, it missed Williamsburg by 2 miles. As the businesses and residents moved closer to the railroad, the town expanded. Its name was eventually changed to Collins in 1906.

• After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Collins was "adopted" by the town Duryea, Penn., which experienced similar storm damage years earlier. The Duryea government raised funds for Collins, helping it to rebuild after the historic storm.
