Lancaster is one of the oldest cities in north Texas, but remains a fairly small community of about 35,000 people despite its prime location less than 20 miles south of Dallas. One of the central landmarks in Lancaster is Lancaster Municipal Airport. The 306-acre facility features a 5,000-foot runway and holds the Dallas/Fort Worth Wing of the Commemorative Air Force Museum and the Cold War Air Museum. Visitors can even experience the Air Force Museum first hand on Open Cockpit Day each September.
Lancaster provides its residents an abundance of outdoor activity options, with almost 800 acres of total parkland, 13 playgrounds, trails, pools, ball fields, a soccer complex, basketball and tennis courts and 12,500-square foot Senior Adult Center. The city’s Bear Creek Nature Preserve features natural wetlands, an outdoor classroom, pavilion, walking and biking trails and equestrian trails. Lancaster has a total of 12 parks, and most of the facilities are available for resident rental. Two of the largest parks in the system are Lancaster City Park, which covers 24 acres, and Ten Mile Creek Preserve, a 47-acre nature park.
Lancaster offers residents and visitors a peak into its past through the Rawlins House, which was built in 1855 by one of the city’s founders. It also celebrates its heritage on its Historic Town Square via 2nd Saturday on the Square, a monthly day festival featuring 20 to 40 arts and crafts vendors and live music. And if you prefer to experience the city indoors, check out two of its most beloved restaurants, Hickory House Barbeque and Bienvenidos Mexican Cantina.
