Troup is located partially in Cherokee and Smith counties, approximately 20 miles southeast of Tyler. The city was first settled when the International Railroad Company constructed the Palestine-Troup line in 1872. The community was originally called Zavalla. • In the 1900s, the city was home to five cotton gins and produced more than 6,000 bales of cotton each year. Some of the fiber was shipped to Genoa, Italy to be spun into yarn.
