Interesting Facts About Kearns
The town of Kearns got its name from the U.S. Air Force training base known as "Camp Kearns." It was established in the midst of World War II in 1942 and became Utah's third-largest city in just a year with 40,000 residents. The living conditions at the camp were terrible, and men who trained at the facility departed swiftly. In 1946, it ceased to be an active facility. Two years later, the materials from the buildings were auctioned off. Some of the oldest homes in Kearns today have materials from the base.
The 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City brought more fame to the town of Kearns. The Utah Olympic Oval was built in 2001 and served as the venue for speed skating competitions. Over 100 world records in speed skating were made in this space, which now serves Utah residents. It continues to host speed skating events while training aspiring hockey players, figure skaters, speed skaters and more.
