Salt Lake City has been ranked as one of the nation's best environments for business and is a major hub for technology-based corporations. The city also boasts four major shopping malls, a light-rail transit system and a major international airport. Salt Lake City, the capital of Utah, covers only 90.5 square miles, but is the largest city in the state with a population of 181,743. Salt Lake Business
Local, state, and federal governments have their largest presence in the city proper itself. Trade, transportation, and utilities also take up a significant portion of employment, with the major employer being the western North America Delta Air Lines hub at Slat Lake City International Airport. Equally significant are the professional and business services, health services and health educational services also serve as significant areas of employment. Other major employers include the University of Utah, Sinclair Oil Corporation, and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Since Utah is one of seven states that allow the establishment of commercially-owned industrial banks, the vast majority of industrial banks in the U.S. have established their headquarters in the Salt Lake City area. High-tech firms with a large presence in the suburbs include e-Bay, Unisys, Siebel, Micron, L-3 Communications and 3M. Other economic activities include tourism, conventions, and major suburban call centers. Tourism has increased since the 2002 Olympic Winter Games, and many hotels and restaurants were built for the events. The convention industry has expanded since the construction of the Salt Palace convention center in the late 1990s, which hosts trade shows and conventions, including the annual Outdoor Retailers meeting and Novell’s annual BrainShare convention. In 2006, the largest potato producer in Idaho, the United Potato Growers of America, announced that it would re-locate its headquarters to Salt Lake City, citing its need for a large international airport. Salt Lake City International is the 18th busiest airport in the world in terms of combined freight and passengers.

The Wasatch Mountains surround the Salt Lake Valley offer pristine lakes and streams, and amazing scenic routes. Winter sports, such as skiing and snowboarding are popular mountain activities. Eight ski resorts lie within 50 miles (80 km) of the city. The Bonneville Salt Flats, a flat, white desert located west of the Great Salt Lake, includes the Bonneville Raceway, where land speed records are set. The stark scenery here has appeared in many Hollywood movies. Located within the grounds of the University of Utah, the Fort Douglas Military Museum campus consists of three buildings which house the library, exhibits, administration offices, artifact storage and workshop areas. The Off Broadway Theatre (OBT) is Salt Lake's downtown hot spot for comedy. From great Broadway-style shows to wild and wacky spoofs and parodies, to amazing improv comedy, there's one thing you can count one with OBT, something funny is always going on! There is the Clark Planetarium, Trolly Square (major shopping, dining and entertainment marketplace), Herber Valley Historic Railroad, Lagoon Amusement Park (a water park historically, accurate Pioneer Village, and musical entertainment), Utah’s Hogle Zoo, Gardner Village (built in 1877, restored and houses Country Furniture and Archibald's Restaurant - Historic homes renovated into quaint shops surround the mill), Factory Stores @ Park City and Hale Centre Theatre to meet the needs and desires of the whole family. There is even more with Ballet West (contemporary and classical ballets), the Utah Opera Company, Sandy City Amphitheater and of course the NBA’s Utah Jazz.
