La Grange is a small unincorporated community in California's Stanislaus County, situated along the Tuolumne River. It's located east of Modesto and north of Merced. Homes for rent are located in a rural setting that's steeped in history, but there are plenty of modern amenities nearby, like great schools, shopping centers and recreational activities.
Historical Facts About La Grange
A group of French sailors who wanted to get into mining were the first to settle in the area around 1849. After some successful gold discoveries, they told friends and relatives about their little camp, which then grew into a settlement known as French Bar or French Camp.
Floods in 1851 and 1852 completely wiped out the dig sites and the camp. French Bar's residents gathered their belongings and set out to find higher ground to settle on. They chose a spot that was about 1 mile upstream, which is where La Grange now sits.
The name of the camp was changed to La Grange in 1854 when the post office was established.
