Cripple Creek was first inhabited by the Utes was first visited because of its wealth of furs. In the 1840s, pioneers came to the Cripple Creek area looking for gold, and their adventure was coined "Pikes Peak or Bust." Although they came up empty then, gold was indeed discovered in Cripple Creek in 1891, and the town's population boomed. Between 1890 and 1910, more than 22 million ounces of gold were extracted from the town's mines. Today, you can experience the mines through several city exhibits. American Eagles Overlook looks out onto Cripple Creek and the Victor Gold Mining Company. You can also take a four-mile excursion around the gold mining district via the Cripple Creek and Victor Narrow Gauge Railroad. Additionally, you can take the Mollie Kathleen Mine Tour, which is the only tour to take you 1,000 feet underground.

Some other popular attractions in Cripple Creek include the Costello Street Coffee House and the Cripple Creek District Museum. The coffee house was built in 1885 and originally known as the McLaughlin House. Now renovated, it serves a variety of coffee and pastries, as well as Saturday dinner and Sunday brunch. The museum consists of three historic houses: the 1893 Colorado trading and Transfer Building, the 1895 Midland Terminal Railroad Depot and the Assay Office. Additionally, Cripple Creek is home to 14 casinos and countless excellent restaurants, including The Lucky Buck Bar and Grille, The Boiler Toom Tavern and Baja Billy's Restaurant and Cantina. Residents also enjoy the hiking, biking, horseback riding and hunting opportunities available in the area.
