Vernon, Connecticut, a small city just outside Hartford, offers local homes for rent amid a friendly atmosphere and entrenched traditions of a close-knit community.
One of the major points of pride for Vernon renters and other residents is the War Memorial Tower on Fox Hill. Today, it is intended to be a monument for the veterans of Vernon and neighboring Rockville, but it has a much longer history. Before Europeans came to the Hartford area, Fox Hill was used as a lookout by the Podunk Native Americans. The land was eventually cleared to become pasture for the settlers, but in 1878, a wooden tower was built to be a community center for the area. Eventually, that tower burned down, and the one that Vernon residents see today was built by a New York architect who modeled the structure after a French Romanesque tower. The memorial was dedicated in 1939, and today stands as a symbol of Vernon's community spirit.
Another staple for the Vernon community is the Vernon Diner, where renters can enjoy retro decor and a fun atmosphere. The diner has an extensive menu of old-fashioned cocktails, including rob roys, manhattans and martinis. Anyone in the mood for authentic Mexican food can check out Pancho Loco, or if Indian food is what you really want, head to Utsav Indian Cuisine. Vernon has a wide array of restaurants that will satisfy any hungry stomach.
