Tampa Bay is very well-known for its beautiful Gulf Coast Beaches -- the weather makes it a year-round vacation. These beautiful white sand beaches are located along Florida's western coast, alongside the Gulf of Mexico. One of the most famous beaches, Ft. Desoto Park, has been featured in TV and magazine articles, having once been named America's No. 1 beach.
Clearwater Beach is known for having the most consecutive days of sunshine, according to the Guinness Book of World Records. Gorgeous, warm sunsets are a favorite feature of Clearwater Beach. And Tarpon Springs, boasting the largest percentage of Greek-Americans of any city in the U.S., is known as the Sponge Capital of the World. The city of Tampa alone has a very unique cultural heritage.
Ybor City, in the Latin Quarter, was once known as the Cigar Capital of the World. The Historic District of Ybor City consists of Cuban, Italian, Greek, Spanish and French cultural influences. For sports fanatics, Tampa Bay offers something for every fan. Tampa is home to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (NFL) and Tampa Bay Lightning (NHL). Only Tampa can boast a Stanley Cup Champion hockey team and no snow. Locals are proud to host New York Yankees Spring Training at Legends Field. Many Super Bowls as well as college football's annual New Years Day Outback Bowl have been hosted in Tampa Bay. Some of the year-round attractions include Busch Gardens, Adventure Island, the Museum of Science & Industry, Dinosaur World, the Salvador Dali Museum and the St. Pete Pier.
Some of the best events to enjoy in the Tampa Bay area are the Florida State Fair, the Florida Strawberry Festival, Bern's WineFest, and Guavaween (Latin Style Halloween Night Festival) for the more daring. But the most famous event in Tampa undoubtedly is the annual Gasparilla Pirate Festival. Hundreds of pirates invade Tampa on the Jose Gaspar pirate ship and the mayor surrenders the key to the city. The Gasparilla Parade draws more than half a million people every year -- it's Tampa's version of Mardi Gras.
There is also an untamed night version of this parade -- the Illuminated Sant'Yago Knight Parade in Ybor City. Again, only the daring attend. The Gasparilla Day parade is along Bayshore Boulevard -- the "world's longest continuous sidewalk," clocking in at 4.5 miles.
On any given day you'll find roller bladers, runners, bikers and power walkers along Bayshore Boulevard. This sidewalk links South Tampa and Downtown Tampa. One side of Bayshore Boulevard is lined with stately historic homes and towering million-dollar condo high rises, while the other has the view of the Bay.
