• The land that Windham now sits on was granted to Abraham Howard, Joseph Blaney and 58 other citizens of Marblehead, Massachusetts, in 1734. It started with the name New Marblehead, but changed to Windham in 1762 after a town in Norfolk County, England.
• In 1744, a fort was built in the settlement. From 1745 to 1751, the inhabitants of Windham lived within the walls of the fort for protection against Native Americans. May 14, 1756, marked the last battle between the residents of Windham and the Native Americans, led by Poland, the chief of the Rockoineko tribe. The citizens came out ahead and were able to live prosperously in the area until the Revolutionary War.
