Halloween Safety

Halloween is one of America’s favorite holidays – and while it can be super-fun, you should also ensure that your kids are safe and protected. Here are some tips on preparing your children to stay safe while having fun on Halloween:

  • Parents who are taking their children trick-or-treating need to educate their little goblins about traffic safety. Remember to always cross the streets safely, walk on sidewalks or paths, and be safe around cars.
  • To increase visibility, children should carry flashlights, glow sticks, and have reflective material on their costumes or bags. Children should also avoid wearing masks that interfere with their ability to spot any potential hazards.
  • Avoid sharp objects: Swords, knives and similar costume accessories should be made of a soft and flexible material.
  • Purchase or make flame retardant costumes.
  • Make sure that your children know that they are not allowed to accept any unwrapped food such as apples or cookies, and are also not allowed to eat any of their candy until it has been inspected.
  • Older children trick-or-treating without an adult should travel in groups and should have an established return time and route before leaving home.

Take these simple safety tips to help your little ghosts and goblins have a safe and fun Halloween!

October is National Pet Awareness Month

Is your pet healthy? October is National Pet Wellness Month. Sponsored by The American Veterinary Medical Association (AMVA) and Fort Dodge Animal Health, this campaign was designed in 2004 to help educate pet owners on preventive pet healthcare by promoting twice-a-year wellness exams for the life of your pet.

Did you know that dogs and cats age 7 times faster than humans? Because they age so rapidly, there are major health changes which can occur at a small period of time. As these pets age, they can experience health problems associated with aging – just as humans. The older your pet, the higher risk for diabetes, arthritis, heart disease, kidney disease, cancer and other serious conditions. You wouldn’t wait seven years to see your doctor for a checkup. So why wait a whole year to have your pet examined by a veterinarian?

Unfortunately, many pets don’t see their veterinarian as often as they should. Taking your dog or cat to the veterinarian twice-a-year will detect, treat, and sometimes prevent problems before they become life threatening. This is also the perfect time to receive important information about nutrition, behavior, dental health or other concerns. Your pet is family, and their health-care should be just as important as your own. Protect your best friend by scheduling a wellness exam today – a healthy pet is a happy pet!

Smart Idea

This Halloween use LED lights in your Jack-O-Lanterns. They don’t generate heat, are much more energy efficient than incandecent light bulbs and are safer than traditional candles.
