Near Fort Smith and the Oklahoma border, Van Buren is the 22nd most populous city in the state. The first recorded part of Van Buren's history is when David Boyd came to the area in 1818. From there, a community grew as settlers started coming in. In 1831, the area was named after Martin Van Buren, who was the Secretary of State under Andrew Jackson at the time and later became president.
