Chicago Landmarks
Chicago is located on the southwestern shore of Lake Michigan and owes much of its character to the extended waterfront. It also features the world's tallest skyline, including the Sears tower, the tallest building in the United States. The historical center of downtown Chicago is known as the "Loop", dominated by skyscrapers overlooking Lake Michigan. The Magnificent Mile, just north of the Loop offers high-end shopping, while Navy Pier stands out with its 150 foot tall Ferris wheel, retail and dining opportunities. And the historic Water Tower is one of the only buildings to have survived the great Chicago fire of 1871.
Living in Chicago
Chicago has an extensive municipal park system with the best known parks lining Lake Shore Drive. These include Lincoln park north of the Loop, Grant Park and Millennium Park east of the Loop, and Burnham, Jackson, and Hyde Parks south of the Loop. Also along the waterfront, Chicago has 31 beaches.
Wind surfing and lakefront cruises are popular entertainment choices that take advantage of Lake Michigan. Also popular are the Lincoln Park Zoo and Navy Pier, and Chinatown has become a destination for both tourists and locals. Chicago has a great sports tradition and you may enjoy catching the Cubs play at Wrigley Field, the Bears at Soldier Field, a White Sox game, a Bulls game, or a Blackhawks game – the list goes on!
Chicago also supports a lively music and theater scene with a constant barrage of plays, musicals, comedy improve, blues, lyric opera and symphonies. And living in Chicago, sooner or later you have to visit at least one its renowned museums such as the Field Museum of Natural History, the Shedd Aquarium, the Adler Planetarium, the Art Institute of Chicago, or the Museum of Science and Industry. You will need both your heavy parka and cool summer clothes in Chicago. During the month of July, the average high is 84.9 F, while the average low during January is 17.1 F.

Chicago’s cost of living varies by neighborhood and distance from downtown. These neighborhoods feature a greater proportion of single-family homes than the highrise filled North side. West side neighborhoods near downtown include Wicker Park, the Ukrainian Village, Humboldt Park, the West Loop, and Greektown. While further West are Humboldt Park, West Town, Lawndale, Austin, and Garfield park.
