Before it was settled, the land was rich in hunting resources such as deer and bison. The Native American tribes in the area were the Sioux, Pottawattamie and Omaha.
Settlement began in the area in 1848, by several men immigrating to Iowa from Tennessee. The building of railroads in the area prompted further growth.
At one point, the community was split into two factions that were very aggressive toward each other. The eastern side of the town was called "Whiskey Row," while the western side was called "Dog Town."
