Memphis Music

The music world is forever indebted to Memphis, considered by most to be the home of the blues and the birthplace of rock and roll. Famous names indelibly tied to the “Bluff City” include Elvis Presley, B.B. King, Johnny Cash, W.C. Handy, Jerry Lee Lewis, Isaac Hayes, Roy Orbison, Otis Redding, Charlie Rich, Aretha Franklin, John Lee Hooker, Howlin’ Wolf, Rufus Thomas, and Booker T. and the MGs. All these artists had or have strong ties to, or were at least greatly influenced by the iconic blues-drenched place known as Beale Street, today a downtown hotspot for locals and tourists alike following a restoration effort that began in the 1980s. Even country music giant Johnny Cash knew how to “Get Rhythm when (he got) the blues.” Gospel and R & B also factor into the Memphis musical landscape that ultimately is all about soul.

Memphis Culture and History

The National Civil Rights Museum was built around the Lorraine Motel where Martin Luther King Jr. was fatally shot and is a center of learning and celebration of civil rights. Memphis and regional culture is also the focus at the Center for Southern Folklore, where the recent boom in the local art scene is in evidence. “Memphis in May” is a multifaceted festival that lasts the entire month and celebrates the music, heritage and cuisine of Memphis (and also spotlights those of a different nation each year).

Ah, the cuisine! One of the main events at Memphis in May is the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest, which focuses on the food for which Memphis is probably most famous. The traditional Southern food cooked at this festival and elsewhere year-round is world-renowned and often spotlighted on television programs such as those on the Food Network. Memphis is not however just the go-to place for ribs; in the last decade the dining scene has broadened considerably and now includes many eateries featuring contemporary and exotic menus.

If you visit Memphis, in addition to the tourist destinations mentioned above, consider checking out Graceland, former home of Memphis’ most famous resident; Mud Island River Park, a 52-acre park with a topographical map of the mighty Mississippi that is to scale and covers five blocks; Sun Studio; the Stax Museum of American Soul Music; The Peabody Hotel, because everyone must see the famous march of the ducks; and a number of establishments in the Beale Street entertainment district.
