Arlington TX History and Work
The first non-Native American settlements in Arlington date back to the 1840s, but the city was not officially founded until 1876 as a result of the incoming Texas and Pacific Railway Company. Reverend Andrew Shannon Hayter named the city in honor of General Robert E. Lee’s home in Arlington, Va. Originally a frontier post, Arlington quickly became an agricultural center, producing large quantities of cotton until the industry tapered off in the 1930s. Arlington dug its city well in 1891, and the mineral water drawn there was often considered medicinal. Although the city permanently capped the well in 1951, a monument was built in honor it 25 years later, and Arlington is still famous for its mineral water. In 1954, General Motors opened an assembly plant in town, which spurred the city’s tremendous suburban growth. Today, Arlington has almost 375,000 residents, making it the 7th largest city in Texas. Lying just 22 miles from Dallas, Arlington is a part of the Dallas-Ft. Worth-Arlington metro area, which has a population of over 6,000,000. Arlington has more than 150,000 jobs and an annual payroll of $5.2 billion.
