Facts for Renters
- Bowling Green was initially known as Chester, after A.M. Chester, a prominent figure in the town. Chester moved to the area in 1883, when only two other families lived in the town. However, Chester was bashful and decided to rename it Bowling Green, after his former residence in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Chester contributed approximately 40 acres to the town of Bowling Green which helped create its railroad in 1886.
- Once the railroad was constructed, a school and a church were built on nearby Payne's Creek.
- Small businesses and the post office also were erected around 1886. Once the community became larger, many people created orange groves and oranges became one of the town's biggest exports. The area also became known for its grapefruits and tangerines.
- The town also farmed other goods and was known for raising cattle and horses. Some of the popular crops grown in the area include corn, sugar cane, potatoes and peanuts.
