The community started as a railroad camp on the high land to the north side of Lake Pontchartrain. After the railroad that connected New Orleans to Cincinnati was completed, the camp stayed and grew into Slidell by 1888.
Slidell had a significant role in World War I and II with its military manufacturing. Eventually, Slidell played a part in the NASA lunar program with computer parts.
