History of Elsa
Originally, Elsa was included in a land grant given to Juan José Ynojosa de Ballí, reflecting the multiethnic culture a resident will find in Elsa.
Prior to 1800, ranchers had settled in the area. Ranching continued to play a heavy role in the economy. Cattle and sheep ranching were prominent industries, and agriculture also played a role.
Anglo-Americans came to Elsa relatively late, first coming in the 1900s. An driving force behind this settlement was truck farming.
Elsa was established as a stop along the Texas and New Orleans Railroad in 1927. The community derived its name from Elsa George, who was the spouse of a local inhabitant.
The community was incorporated in 1940.
