Some of the first businesses that were built in the city included an inn, a tavern and a trading post. When railroads reached the city, its major industry became lumber, and Oshkosh earned the nickname Sawdust City.
The name Oshkosh earned national recognition in 1910, with the widespread popularity of the clothing brand Oshkosh B'Gosh.
