Facts for Renters
Bonsall was first discovered in 1769, and has been inhabited by big game hunters, ranchers and farmers.
The town was originally called Mount Fairview in the 1870s, and later named after retired minister James Bonsall, who created a fruit tree nursery in 1889. Bonsall was taking a wagon through the land when it broke down, and he built the nursery all for $3. Bonsall's house still stands today. By the late 1800s, the town had a post office, a general store, a hotel, a blacksmith shop and a school. The hotel held passerbys when heavy rains made it impossible to travel through the valley. The fertile lands allowed it to become the center of a small dairy industry.
The town has many outdoor facilities families can take advantage of. Nature lovers can enjoy the Bonsall Preserve, a 27-acre wildlife reserve. Avid golfers can play 18 holes at the San Luis Rey Downs Golf club. Those interested in learning the game of golf can enroll in classes at the golf school. Enjoy adventure?
