Eagle Rock was named after a large rock in the town that resembles an eagle's head. In 1771, the San Gabriel Mission was established. In 1876, the Austrian Archduke Ludwig Louis Salvator visited Eagle Rock Valley and drew the first picture of the area. In 1884, the first school opened in a barn that was donated by Milton Brown, and in 1887 the first railroad was built in the town. In 1906, Glendale established a western border which would later become Eagle Rock City. In 1910, Eagle Rock was selected as the first spot for the Southern California American Boy Scouts to go. The Boy Scout Movement had only started three months earlier.
Eagle Rock has always been an area of business development, and the community supports many of its local businesses. The town has always also had fundamental values of comradery, land development and restoring historical buildings.
Located just outside of the heart of Los Angeles, Eagle Rock has ties to the motion picture industry.
