Downey is considered one of the birthplaces of the modern fast-food craze, as it is the site of several landmark restaurants. The longest operating McDonald's in the world is located on Lakewood and Florence in Downey, which originally opened in 1953. The location is now the site of a museum and gift shop. Downey is also home to the first Taco Bell as well as Johnie's Broiler, which has been used as the location for numerous films, including "Heat," "Reality Bites" and "Short Cuts."
While numerous notable celebrities have called Downey home, two of the city's more famous residents were The Carpenters, the popular folk/pop band led by Karen Carpenter in the 1960s and 1970s.
