Los Banos is a city in central California at the intersection of routes 152 and 165. This Merced County city is located near Interstate 5 for easy north-south access throughout the state. The first Europeans who explored the area were Spaniards in the early 1800s. They were shocked to see so many different animals in the valley, many of which are preserved today in the waterfowl sanctuary.
Los Banos's existence and success may be due to a 1850s explorer, Henry Miller, who came to the area without any money and built up an enormous land and cattle empire. He's credited with bringing many of the ranching and farming techniques and crops currently used in the area back in the 1800s.
