There are two public transportation agencies that operate in South El Monte: the Metro and Foothill Transit. If driving's more your thing, LAÂ is a straight shot on U.S. Route 101.
In terms of education, South El Monte has three school districts - Valle Lindo, Mountain View and El Monte Union - that contain three elementary schools, a middle school and a high school, as well as a private institution, Epiphany Catholic School.
South El Monte is very much a children's paradise. In terms of youth groups, there are local Girl Scout and Boy Scout troops, as well as a Little League team. The city is also home to a Mini Center, an Aquatic Center, four parks (Mary Van Dyke Park, New Temple Park, Shively Park and Thienes Gateway Park), the 1,492-acre Whittier Narrows Recreation Area and the 400-acre Whittier Narrows Nature Center, which borders the San Gabriel River. That said, you don't have to be a kid to enjoy the local parks and facilities, particularly the local golfing opportunities.
