• Squaw Valley is a u-shaped valley in Sierra Nevada located in between Tahoe City and Truckee. Placer County got its name from the Spanish word for "placed". Gold was hidden in the stream early on and surfaced from natural erosion. The gold was then sorted by panning, rocking and other methods. These processes caused Placer County residents to be some of the wealthiest in California. 
• The area was initially inhabited by Native Americans when they would explore for hunting season.
• Pioneers later came to the area to mine for gold in 1849 during the Gold Rush, since there were claims silver was found at the base of Squaw Valley. Many settlers rushed to the area in hopes of finding more. However, they were disappointed when they realized that the initial silver found was not silver at all. Upon realizing their misfortune, the residents moved out of the valley and into nearby Comstock Lode in Virginia City, Nevada.
• Once people realized there was no silver or gold in the area, the town became an area for logging and mining. Later on, the Squaw Development Company began buying land which helped create Squaw Valley.
• In 1960, the area was commemorated for 100 years of skiing by hosting the VIII Olympic Winter Games. It was also the first televised version of Olympic games.
