Fleming Island began as an airfield for the U.S. Navy around 1942. Its use ended in the early 1960s, but residential development didn't begin until just before 2000.
It's within the School District of Clay County, and is home to three elementary schools and one high school. Fleming Island children attend middle school in either Green Cove Springs or Orange Park.
Fleming Island is home to the main branch of the Clay County Public Library, which boasts a wide range of books and other media and hosts numerous programs for kids and adults alike.
