These urban centers, offering an abundance of job opportunities, entertainment and culture, are a main incentive to rent in the Clayton area. In addition, homes for rent in the borough allow new residents to become part of a town that boasts a rich history, pleasant neighborhoods, a variety of distinct geographic zones and a busy schedule of community events. The area presently known as Clayton was settled shortly before the American Revolutionary War, and began to expand rapidly when a glass factory was constructed in the 1850s. Today, the borough is mostly residential, with houses for rent surrounding a small downtown that runs along County Road 610 and Delsea Drive. Half of the Glassboro Wildlife Management Area sits inside Clayton in the northeast segment of town. This zone is composed of a swamp forest with streams, ponds and several cleared fields. Visitors are welcome to walk through paths lined with laurel, blueberry and wild azalea bushes and seek out rare bird species, including the scarlet tanager, northern parula and American redstart.
For entertainment and recreation, many residents with Clayton rentals visit Scotland Run Park and Wilson Lake, which are adjacent to the Glassboro Wildlife Management Area. Scotland Park is the host of many community events, including the Gloucester County annual Waterfest. Clayton also holds Movies in the Park, Concerts in the Park and Clayton Day events.
