Gainesville is a charming city in Hall County. It's approximately an hour northeast of Atlanta. Facts for Renters

  • The area was initially established as "Mule Camp Springs" by Native Americans. Hall County was then created and the land was designated as the site for the county government. It was chartered by the state legislature in November 1821.
  • The town was named after war hero Gen. Edmund Gaines, who fought in the War of 1812 and helped build roads and oversee the military that same year.
  • Gainesville has been involved in government longer than more than half of the states in America.
  • In 1828, people on the hunt for gold came to settle in the town. As a result, local business flourished. By 1851, much of Gainesville was destroyed in a massive fire. Twenty years later, a new railroad helped bring commerce and reconstruction to the town.
  • By 1898, the railroad helped the town prosper in the textile industry.
  • After World War II, local settler Jesse Jewell began farming chickens, making the town "The Poultry Capital of the World."
  • In 1957, Lake Lanier was constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which now covers more than 38,000 acres.
