Historical Facts About Pella

  • In 1847, a group of 800 Dutch immigrants led by Henry Peter Scholte founded the community. They left their homeland to be free of famine and religious persecution by the state church of the Netherlands. Before they left, the immigrants had already decided to name their new home Pella, City of Refuge.
  • The settlers purchased 18,000 acres of fertile farm land for around $1.25 per acre. Three churches, a newspaper and schools were established within the first 10 years of the settlement.
